Albert Frey, one of the most important modernist architects of our time, lived and worked in Palm Springs for seven decades. Frey produced such notable local landmarks as the Frey House II, Palm Springs City Hall, and the Aerial Tramway Valley Station. The Russell House is a unique property with Albert Frey contributions for a unique infinity pool design. The gated hillside-retreat was built in 1959 and restored extensively in 2007 now has modern appeal blended with vintage furnishings and accents.
The Russell House soars 200 feet above Palm Springs with spectacular unobstructed-panoramic views of the Coachella Valley below and the mountains in the distance. The house is of steel and wood-frame construction with large spans of glass that open up the residence for indoor / outdoor ambiance. As the Frey II House is famous for a huge boulder protruding into the living room, The Russell House’s infinity edge pool (one of the first ever design in the Coachella Valley) and Jacuzzi surround a huge boulder that is a lasting testament to Frey’s genius. Frey designed the pool to resemble a sandy beach, but was unable to fulfill his vision due to the limited materials available in 1959. In the recent restoration, the original Frey plans and design specifications were completed as originally intended. A 30-foot waterfall that cascades into a coy pond from natural-form rock also adds to the natural beauty on this property. The terrace surrounding the home makes up 3,000 square feet of additional leisure space that spans the side of the mountain. For the avid tennis player a regulation tennis court that ascends 250 feet above Palm Springs is also available for enjoyment.
The Russell House offers 1,700 square feet of interior space full of classic mid-century furnishings displayed throughout blended with the modern amenities of today’s homes. The master bedroom offers plenty of comfort with natural and ambient lighting and spectacular views of the valley below. An adjacent den offers additional sleeping arrangements. The kitchen features state of the art appliances and plenty of counter space for culinary creativity. The polished floors throughout the home add to the seductive ambiance this retreat offers. The natural elements blended with architectural design makes this home the pure essence of a Palm Springs coveted lifestyle. In the 1980s, famed movie producer Allan Carr (“Grease”) owned and lived in the residence.
